MCF Denounces Attempts at Stoking Culture Wars to Divide Communities

Official statement from Muslim Charities Forum. Read More

Muslim Charities Forum (MCF) is proud to have served on the Civil Society Advisory Group, which played a key role in shaping the Civil Society Covenant. Its recent launch stands as a testament to the commitment of civil society in establishing a renewed framework for collaboration with government. MCF looks forward to continuing its work with both government and civil society partners to deliver meaningful, systemic change.

For over 18 years, MCF has served as the UK’s network of Muslim-led charities and community organisations working for social good. As a recognised and reputable infrastructure body, we have contributed to the strengthening of civil society through promoting sustainable practices and fostering community relations, as well as championing faith in public policy. Our work has been integral to building a more impactful and effective charity sector.

Some right-wing media continue to fuel divisive culture wars. The singling out of British Muslim voices in a process that included all of civil society, such as faith-based and non-faith groups, trade unions, and community organisations, appears to reinforce a narrative that marginalises diverse groups. We are under no illusion that such actors seek to limit or even exclude such voices from civic participation. We unequivocally reject these divisive tactics and reaffirm our commitment to a cohesive and vibrant society.

Fadi Itani OBE, CEO of Muslim Charities Forum, said:

“The Covenant reflects the tireless work of diverse voices across civil society and government. We must guard against rhetoric that divides us and instead focus on making the Covenant a success in serving communities.”

The Civil Society Covenant serves as an opportunity for renewed relationships between government and civil society, putting communities at the heart of policymaking and service delivery. The success of it lies in the inclusion across civil society’s diversity, including faith based organisations. MCF is proud to be one of 1,200 organisations involved in its creation and remains committed to building an inclusive civil society where all communities are represented and valued.
