MCF is deeply concerned about the Government’s decision to reduce the UK’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) budget to just 0.3% of GNI, which comes at a moment of unprecedented global need as simultaneous humanitarian crises unfold in Sudan, Lebanon, Palestine, and beyond.

Recent cuts have already resulted in preventable disasters, including in El-Fasher. Slashing aid further could lead to millions of avoidable deaths and leave the world’s most vulnerable without protection.

Framing aid cuts as necessary for defence ignores expert warnings: development strengthens security, and reducing it leaves space for malign actors to exploit vulnerable communities.

Fadi Itani, CEO of MCF, said:

“Cuts to aid risk eroding the UK’s global reputation. The UK must demonstrate leadership by filling widening gaps in development spending, protecting vulnerable communities, preventing crises, and strengthening global stability.”

The Government’s decision to reduce aid threatens to abandon the world’s most vulnerable at a time when they need support the most. MCF urges the Government to reverse the reduction to 0.3% and commit to restoring ODA to 0.7%.
