Today, we honour the millions of people murdered in the Holocaust. As we reflect on their suffering, we must renew our commitment to combatting prejudice and hatred in all its forms, wherever it appears.

From genocides in Bosnia & Herzegovina to Sudan to Palestine, we have witnessed entire communities targeted, displaced, and destroyed because of who they are. Generations have been wiped out, families torn apart, and cultures devastated. “Never again” must mean never again for anyone. It cannot be dependent on colour or creed, but it must be rooted in our shared humanity. As we remember the Holocaust, we must acknowledge those who have faced persecution since, and who continue to endure it today.

Equally, we must confront antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of hatred that persist within our own society. We are living in an increasingly polarised climate, marked by rising prejudice and far-right extremism that targets minoritised communities. Genocide does not emerge overnight, but it unfolds in stages, through division, dehumanisation, and exclusion. These warning signs are visible across Western societies today and demand urgent action from policymakers and institutions.

Charities and civil society organisations play an essential role in bridging communities and fostering cohesion at a time when hostile forces seek to divide us. Their work in supporting people of all faiths and none, in building solidarity across the country, is indispensable. These organisations must be championed and actively supported so that they continue their vital contribution to the resilience of our shared society.

Ultimately, we must work toward a society rooted in dignity, equity, and justice for everyone.
