Spring Statement: Muslim Charities Forum Warns of Mounting Financial Pressures on Charities

Following the Spring Statement, Muslim Charities Forum (MCF) remains concerned that the economic outlook will continue to place significant pressure on the charity sector.

This year’s statement saw little change to fiscal policy, in order to demonstrate the lack of need to address current challenges and present a narrative of progress. Charities continue to face increasing costs, including additional burdens through the rise in employers’ National Insurance Contributions (NICs).  The conflict in the Middle East has created further economic uncertainty, with the potential for higher energy prices. Such pressures would hit charities particularly hard, exacerbating the financial strain they are already facing.  The combination of these strains will make it harder for organisations to meet core running costs, and the omission of support is disturbing, considering the implications for the sector and the need for meaningful support to ensure they can continue delivering essential services. Fadi Itani OBE, CEO of MCF, said: “Cost of living pressures continue to disproportionately impact charities. Government support remains limited, leaving many organisations struggling to deliver the services communities rely on. Charities need reassurance and decisive action to enable them to sustain their vital work.” MCF urges the government to safeguard the sector by exempting charities from NICs and providing adequate support to meet rising costs, including energy.
