Hassan Damluji

Director, Global Nation Senior advisor to Gates & Rockefeller Foundations & UN Agencies Visiting Senior Fellow, London School of Economics Author, The Responsible Globalist (Penguin, 2019)

Hassan is the founder and Director of Global Nation, a think-do tank aimed at improving global cooperation. Global Nation advises the world’s leading institutions working on tackling humanity’s greatest challenges, including the Gates Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Wellcome Trust, WHO, WMO, UNDRR, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, and national governments. Global Nation also receives grant funding to pursue thought-leadership and coalition-building for a fairer international system, including the Global Solidarity Report, its flagship annual assessment of the international community. Through his work at Global Nation, Hassan has been one of the strategic architects of WHO’s new Pandemic Hub in Berlin.

Hassan spent a decade at the Gates Foundation, the world’s largest philanthropy, where he was a close personal advisor to Bill Gates, and served as Deputy Director for Global Policy and Advocacy. During his time at Gates, he built a range of large-scale development initiatives and was closely involved in global pandemic response. He also founded and led the Gates Middle East team, as well as leading its Pakistan and East Asia teams.

Hassan has written extensively about global development and politics. His first book, The Responsible Globalist, was published by Penguin Allen Lane in 2019. It was described by Bill Gates as “thoughtful and well written”, by Riz Ahmed as “visionary” and by Richard Curtis as “the book I would have written if I was smart enough”.
