Sustainability and Climate

We work to amplify voices, movements and develop the capacity of climate action within UK Muslim-led charities.  Find out more about the faith-led, community-driven work we are doing and how your organisation can get involved.

In response to the ongoing climate crisis across the world, we support Muslim-led charities working to act on climate change through collaboration, capacity-building, and advocacy. From the UK to the Global South, MCF’s network has the opportunity to make positive impact on our environment and contribute to a more just and sustainable world.

Why Sustainability and Climate Justice Matter to MCF

Environmental inequality remains one of the most pressing yet overlooked justice issues of our time. In the UK, marginalised and low-income communities – including many Muslim communities – often bear the brunt of air pollution, lack of access to green spaces, and live in areas more vulnerable to climate-related risks such as flooding or heatwaves. Around the world, communities in the Global South face even starker realities, from extreme weather events and rising sea levels to prolonged drought, food insecurity and forced displacement, exacerbating and deepening poverty and inequality. This is often despite these communities contributing the least to climate change and carbon emissions.

This stark imbalance, where those least responsible suffer the most, is a core reason why we are committed to climate and environmental action. As a faith-based network working with Muslim-led organisations in the UK and internationally, we recognise that environmental justice is deeply connected to social justice, economic dignity, and global equity.

MCF is working to raise awareness of these inequalities, build capacity across our sector, and support our members in embedding sustainable and climate-conscious practices in their work. Whether it’s advocating for climate justice, supporting community-based environmental projects, or highlighting the role of faith and Islamic principles in protecting the planet, our commitment is rooted in a vision of a fairer, more compassionate world, one that addresses environmental inequality both at home and abroad.

Further Resources and Reading:

Home | Al Mizan– The Al-Mizan Covenant offers a powerful Islamic ethical framework for environmental action, rooted in Qur’anic principles of stewardship and balance. For Muslim charities, it provides faith-led guidance to align their work with environmental justice, inspire community engagement, and advocate for climate action with confidence and legitimacy.

IPCC report – The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) brings together global scientists to assess how climate change is affecting our world and what we must do to respond. Their reports provide vital insights that can help charities design sustainable, future-ready aid and development projects, especially for communities most at risk.

Harvest-ometer | Good to Grow – Great for understanding how much carbon you are capturing with your community gardens – This simple online tool helps growers keep track of how much food they grow, how much money they save, and how much carbon they save compared to buying produce from the supermarket.

Global Risks Report 2025 | World Economic Forum  the further reading list – The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2025 helps to understand the world’s most urgent threats from climate change and conflict to food insecurity and ecosystem collapse. By using these insights, Muslim charities can build programmes that are sustainable, resilient, and responsive to the challenges facing communities worldwide.
