On the 6th and 7th December, our Future Leaders attended their first NCS Futuremakers launch event hosted by the National Citizens Service, as part of their UK Year of Service programme. The event provided a chance to interact with the cohort members from other partner organisations who are also a part of this programme.

Aside from Muslim Charities Forum, NCS’ other partner organisations attended including British Red Cross, Catch22, City Year UK, Groundwork, and TCV (The Conservation Volunteers). The aim of the launch event aside from meeting for the first time in person, was to essentially to encourage the entire cohort to focus on building a new network, understand and learn from each other, as well as prepare them for their future ahead.

What did the two-day launch consist of?

On the first day the purpose was to mainly to allow the cohort to familiarise themselves with their peers, and understand how to both build and best utilise their network. A session was held and delivered by the NCS Trust on building, developing and the benefits of networking as well as understanding and utilising the many tools we have at our disposal. The first day concluded with an amazing networking dinner, where the futuremakers had a chance to put into practice and reflect on the day’s learnings.

The second day focused on making an impact during the programme and beyond, including a session hosted by Udamon – an organisation that ‘provides a platform for students to take a human-cantered approach to career planning’. This was followed by a session delivered by ‘I Have a Voice’ (IHAV), an organisation that pushes young people to speak up on issues that concern them and encourage them to take jobs in policymaking. The session motivated the futuremakers on the importance of social and collective action, and acknowledged ways to make positive change in the world through not just the programme but overall.

What were our Future Leaders’ thoughts on the event?

MCF Future Leader reflections:

“The day made us actively reflect” and “think in depth about what exactly we are doing and how it will help make an impact” – Hana

“ An amazing opportunity to meet and network with other likeminded individuals” – Lukman

“A tangible way to encourage young people to make a change in wider community” – Unaisa

It is clear that the NCS Futuremakers event not only connected and brought together young people from across the UK, representing a plethora of different organisations each supporting their communities in different ways, but it also allowed them to leave feeling further inspired and motivated to take further action and continue making positive change in the world.
