Pro Bono Economics has published the final report from The Law Family Commission on Civil Society ‘Unleashing the power of civil society’.

From two years of research across the sector involving hundreds of organisations, this report sets out the challenges of the last few years and the vision for a thriving civil society in the UK. From Covid19 to the current Cost-of-Living crisis, strike action and economic recession, civil organisations are at the helm for the growing number of vulnerable and under-served.

The Law Family Commission, launched in December 2020, has carried out programmes of research into how the potential of civil society can be empowered to build upon community and how the value and power of the sector should be recognised and supported through social action. Calling on public, private and social organisations, it makes recommendations based on accurate sector-wide findings to instigate social change.  Supported by the Law Family Foundation, this latest report is a must-read for all involved in the sector, including funders, policy-makers and government.

The detailed report calls on a need to change philanthropy as it currently stands and unlock new insights and support through the use of data. Integral to this is a recommendation for a partnership between civil society and business to diversify income streams as well as a review and change to the relationship that government has with civil and social organisations. Recognition of and supporting resilience and development of local action features heavily.

The key recommendations include:

  • * Building productivity and organisational effectiveness
  • * Creating timely, accessible data and robust evidence about the sector
  • * Improving the scale, distribution and impact of funding for the sector.
  • * Bringing businesses and civil society together
  • * Strengthening relationships with policymakers
  • * Unleashing potential at local and regional level
