Monday 6th February 2023, devastating earthquakes have rocked southern Turkiye at the borders with Syria.

More than 51,000 people have been killed and over 100,000 injured*. More than 500,000 have been displaced from their homes. 12,141 buildings have been destroyed.*

The initial quake, a huge 7.8 magnitude struck Gaziantep and surrounding areas in the early hours of the morning, destroying homes and buildings that came tumbling down as people slept. The Idlib region of Syria, already inflicted by conflict and poverty, was also badly affected. The force of the quake was felt as far as Cyprus and Egypt.

A further quake measuring 7.5 magnitude struck at 10.30am GMT and after-shocks are ongoing.

Emergency response teams have been deployed to the area. Syrian authorities are reporting a death toll of over 1000 people and 2000 injured. Turkiye’s disaster agency has reported more than 5000 died in the initial earthquake with many more deaths since and to come.

Humanitarian aid agencies have dispatched emergency response teams to the area to find those trapped in the rubble and bring people to safety.
